Peeling The Orange
Hi, I’m Daniella. I am a 200 certified yoga teacher and a nutrition student. I am also the creator of Peeling the Orange, a space dedicated to intentional living, consistency, and the slow, steady work of becoming your healthiest self.
My journey into health and wellness didn’t start with a perfect routine or a Pinterest worthy transformation. It began in the summer of 2021. After a challenging first year of college, I realized there was a lot I needed to figure out about myself.
I started out majoring in early childhood education because I wanted to be the teacher I never had. But even with my genuine love for learning, my lack of structure and organization showed up everywhere, especially in my grades. Deep down, I knew I was capable of so much more. I just didn’t know how to bridge the gap between my potential and my reality.
The Beginning of My Wellness Journey
That summer, everything shifted.
I committed to eating whole foods. I started lifting weights and studying biology. I practiced yoga twice a day and journaled. I reduced social media use. I built small rituals that grounded me. I redefined what “trying” meant for me. Reading textbooks with intention, rewriting notes, creating flashcards, submitting assignments early.
And unexpectedly, even with all the added effort, life felt easier. My mind felt clearer. My body felt stronger. My confidence grew.
At the same time, something else was happening:
I started paying attention — really paying attention — to the world around me.
I was working part time at a grocery store. I started to be present during my shift and making an intentional point to notice people. I learned how many people struggle with grocery shopping. Stress and misinformation often cause higher spending. People long for a positive experience with others in their community. Customers shared stories, struggles, recipes, and pieces of their lives with me.
From this, I learned two truths that guide everything I do now:
Everyone deserves a safe, empowering experience with food.
And being present and intentionally kind can transform your entire life.
Finding My Path: Nutrition & Yoga
These realizations, along with my growing love for biology and food, led me to pursue a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Buffalo State, where I also minor in Health Promotion and Human Biology. As I moved deeper into the program, I realized that being a dietitian isn’t just about the science — it’s about the ability to connect, empathize, and lead by example.
Through yoga, I learned what it truly means to “live for others”:
holding myself accountable, striving to grow, and showing up with authenticity so I can guide others to do the same.
I’ve been practicing yoga for four years, and earlier this year, I completed my 200-Hour Power Yoga Teacher Training. It was one of the most challenging seasons of my life: balancing classes, an internship, and weekend-long trainings stretched me thin. I wasn’t showing up on my mat for myself, and I doubted whether I was ready to teach.
My first class back home was, in my mind, a disaster — I dropped clementines on the floor during a “peeling the orange” meditation, rushed through the sequence, and got stuck in my head. I left feeling like I should never teach again.
But growth is rarely graceful.
I met with a mentor, worked through my fears, and dared to teach again.
This time, everything felt different. My sequencing clicked. My presence deepened. My confidence returned.
Now, I teach weekly power yoga classes, focused on strength building, energy alignment, breath, and personal empowerment. My favorite poses are backbends and inversions, and my favorite part of teaching is the way a room full of strangers becomes a community.
I still have a long way to go, I doubt myself a lot, and I am definitely not perfect. Regardless, I want to share my story and speak honestly about where I’m at, so other people feel like they can do the same. Studying how to help people heal while still being so early in this journey myself can feel weird, but writing has always provided me such clarity, and I want to document my experiences as I grow.
Peeling the Orange: What This Space Means
Peeling the Orange as a philosophy.
It’s the belief that wellness is layered.
That you don’t have to change your whole life at once.
Just peel back one layer, then another, and another.
It’s the understanding that you can always make the next right choice.
That mistakes do not define you.
That presence, kindness, and accountability can change everything.
